Traditional Feature Headers

Glazed or burnt headers were an accidental phenomena caused when old inefficient brick kilns created hot areas which would cause the clay to vitrify and turn a blackened colour. Modern efficient brick kilns do not produce the conditions to overburn headers. In order to ensure modern developments can blend with the beautiful brickwork of the past, we have developed the Kevington range of feature headers.

Reproducing the traditional feel of feature headers

Until the early 20th century most walls where constructed in 9 inch (225mm) Flemish bond. This brick bond means that every other brick is laid with the header showing, creating the pattern we are so used to seeing today across the southern areas of Britain.

Two methods of production for quality finish

Kevington offers two methods of producing feature header bricks. These are:-

Kiln Burnt Range:

Sourcing distinctively coloured bricks from some of the finest brickworks, the fired range offers naturally coloured products. (Available in 65mm format only)

Mist Grey FH4041
A handmade weald clay brick that has been produced in Kent and Sussex for centuries. Available in 65mm format, and 50mm to special order.

Funnel Black FH4520
A traditional clamp fired stock brick produced in one of the few remaining clamp turning kilns in Britain. Manufactured using a traditional Berry type press, the texture is of old pressed stock bricks. Available in 65mm only.

Ebony Nut Brown FH4120
A wirecut, extruded brick which gives it the very
distinguished sharp arises. Ideal for use with uniform pressed and wirecut bricks or as features.

Hand Treated Range:

Using a chemical tint we can colour any clay facing brick in three unique colours. We use either bricks from site, or we can provide sympathetic sizes, textures and colours to suit your project.

Sizes: 73mm, 68mm, 65mm, 50mm.

Textures: Handmade, stock pressed, engineering pressed, slop moulded & wirecut.

Charcoal Black FHTH65
The Charcoal Black represents some of the very darkest of old glazed headers, common on the Sussex/Kentish borders.

Anthracite Blue/Grey
FHTH55

The Anthracite Blue/Grey
is a lighter tint with a hint
of blue.

Ash Grey FHTH35
The Ash Grey is a lighter tint which is commonly found in Berkshire.
